Inside Japanese Culture
In Japan, there are small local community groups called “Chōnaikai” (町内会). These neighbourhood associations organise festivals and seasonal events throughout the year, helping to keep local traditions alive.
One of their most cherished activities is the Mochi-tsuki (餅つき) event held at the beginning of the year, where families gather to pound rice and make fresh mochi together. While participation in chōnaikai has been declining as younger families move away from local community involvement, these traditions still continue in many neighbourhoods across Japan.
Even today, you can still find these warm, community-based events taking place quietly at the local level, preserving a unique and meaningful part of Japanese culture.
Our Japanese sushi nori pairs beautifully with freshly pounded mochi, especially when dipped in soy sauce (shōyu), creating a simple yet delicious traditional flavour.
